Family Woodcraft Session - Hand Carve an Egg Flipper (spatula) from a log

A chance to for some quality family time, with parents and children working together on a shared greenwood project.

About this Event

This course is similar to the standard 'carve and egg flipper' course, but with a few changes that make it more suitable for younger children (min age 7 years)) to get involved.

Experience the pleasure and satisfaction of working togehter carving your very own egg flipper from a log recently harvested from our own woodland. This is a great way to unwind, connect with nature and explore your more creative side. The course will run from my woodland workshop in Ghyll Wood on the fabulous Wyresdale Park estate. We can make use of both indoor and outdoor space depending on the weather, and a wood-burner will keep us toastie warm during the coldest of weathers.

What will the course cover

You will be learn how to:

  • prepare a billet (slice) of freshly harvested timber for the shave horse, using a hand axe

  • refine the shape using a shave horse and draw-knife

  • finish off with a carving axe and carving knife

  • apply appropriate treatment to protect your new creation

You will be taught the safe use of tools, and how to create a safe work station, but please be aware that working with any edge tools presents an element of risk. Patents/guardians will be responsible for working with and supporting their child throughout the project.

What you need to know

This course is suitable for beginners, and children seven years or older supported by an adult - no previous wood-crafting skills necessary. The ticket price is for one child and one adult to share one work station and is fully inclusive of all materials and tool use. Please contact me if you have any questions about this session.

Please wear clothing that is suitable for the expected weather conditions and that you don't mind getting a little messy, and good fitting, sturdy footwear with a grippy sole. We can make use of both indoor and outdoor space dependant on the weather, and a wood-burning stove will keep us warm on the coldest of days. Please note that toilets are up by the cafe.

Basic refreshments will be provided on the day. The fabulous Apple Store Cafe is just a few metres away and makes excellent food, so you can combine this course with a cafe treat, but as it can get quite busy it may be worth booking a space!
