Family Woodcraft - Magic Wand Carving

A chance for some quality family time, with parents and children working together on a shared greenwood project.

About this Event

Work together with your child to make a magic wand from a small log/branch harvested from our own woodland. Whilst we can ensure you are successful at creating a wand, you will have to supply your own magic! The magic of the woodland setting may help with this!!

The course will run from my woodland workshop in Ghyll Wood on the fabulous Wyresdale Park estate. We can make use of both indoor and outdoor space depending on the weather, and a wood-burner will keep us toastie warm during the coldest of weathers.

This course is suitable for children age five and above and is a straight forward project. We have the flexibility to adapt tool choice on the day depending on the age and size of you child.

What will the course cover

You will be learn how to:

  • Select and cut a suitable length of wood for your wand using a Japanese saw

  • shape the basic form using either a potato peeler for younger children or a shave horse and draw-knife for slightly older and bigger children

  • finish off shaping with a carving knife (for older children & parents)

  • add your own design to your wand using pyrography and colour

You will be taught the safe use of tools, and how to create a safe work station, and we will provide appropriate tools for each child, but please be aware that working with any edge tools presents an element of risk. Patents/guardians will be responsible for working with and supporting their child throughout the project.

What Else do you need to know

The ticket price is for one child and one adult to share one work station and is fully inclusive of all materials and tool use. There is a maximum of four tickets available. Please contact me if you have any questions about this session.

Please wear clothing that is suitable for the expected weather conditions and that you don't mind getting a little messy, and good fitting, sturdy footwear with a grippy sole. We can make use of both indoor and outdoor space dependant on the weather, and a wood-burning stove will keep us warm on the coldest of days. Please note that toilets are up by the cafe.

Basic refreshments will be provided on the day. The fabulous Apple Store Cafe is just a few metres away and makes excellent food, so you can combine this course with a cafe treat, but as it can get quite busy it may be worth booking a space!
