Make a Unique Christmas Gift - Egg Flipper

  • The Applestore Cafe Wyresdale Park, Scorton (map)

A great introduction to working with greenwood, we will use traditional tools and skills to create an egg flipper (spatula) from a log.

About this Event

A great opportunity to hand carve a sustainable and very cool gift for someone special, or just to keep for your own kitchen! Experience the pleasure and satisfaction of using traditional and very ancient hand tools to carve your very own egg flipper from a log recently harvested from our own woodland. This is a great way to unwind, connect with nature and explore your more creative side. The course will run from my woodland workshop in Ghyll Wood on the fabulous Wyresdale Park estate. We can make use of both indoor and outdoor space depending on the weather, and a wood-burner will keep us toastie warm during the coldest of weathers.

What will the course cover

You will be learn how to:

  • select a suitable log

  • split the log into usable billets

  • create a rough out with a carving axe

  • refine the shape using a shave horse and draw-knife

  • finish off with a carving axe and carving knife

You will be taught the safe use of tools, and how to create a safe work station, but please be aware that working with any edge tools presents an element of risk. You may have time to make more than one utensil depending on the design you choose and how well you progress.

What you need to know

This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in learning a little about the thrills of working with greenwood, no previous wood-crafting skills necessary. Young people age 14 – 16 are welcome to attend but must be accompanied by an adult who is also a paying participant (for younger children please see the Family oriented session that may be more suitable, however feel free to speak to me if you have any questions about your child participating).

Please wear clothing that is suitable for the expected weather conditions and that you don't mind getting a little messy, and good fitting, sturdy footwear with a grippy sole. We can make use of both indoor and outdoor space dependant on the weather, and a wood-burning stove will keep us warm on the coldest of days. Basic refreshments will be provided on the day. The fabulous Apple Store Cafe is just a few metres away and makes excellent food, so you can combine this course with a cafe treat, but as it can get quite busy it may be worth booking a space!
